A short story is a work of fiction that is usually written in prose, often in narrative format. This format tends to be more pointed than longer works of fiction, such as novellas (in the 20th and 21st century sense) and novels or books. Short story definitions based upon length differ somewhat even among professional writers, due somewhat in part to the fragmentation of the medium into genres. Since the short story format includes a wide range of genres and styles, the actual length is determined by the individual author's preference (or the story's actual needs in terms of creative trajectory or story arc) and the submission guidelines relevant to the story's actual market. Guidelines vary greatly among publishers. Many short story writers define their work through a combination of creative, personal expression and artistic integrity. As a result, many attempt to resist categorization by genre as well as definition by numbers, finding such approaches limiting and counter-intuitive to artistic form and reasoning. As a result, definitions of the short story based upon length splinter even more when the writing process is taken into consideration. From Wikipedia under the

Do I send them in to magazines or to a publisher? Which magazines publish short stories? If my story is accepted will I get paid for it and how much, round about? Asked by Fortuna P - Wed Sep 5 04:38:12 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. The Writers' Handbook 2007 may help. It has a list of Publishers and Agents who you can send them to. From my experience, I'd start with the publishers, as agents are too swamped to deal with them. Do you have a whole book's worth of short stories to publish? You could try self-publishing on sites like www.lulu.com. Or try joining a writers' forum like and ask around. There are plenty of published authors on there Answered by John Conway - Wed Sep 5 04:50:05 2007 How many stories should a book of short stories have? Q. Asked by Watuzzi - Sun Sep 7 15:12:15 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. ... depends on the author and on the length of the stories. I have two volumes of O. Henry short stories--one had 10 stories, the other 100. Both felt just right, even though they were written by the same writer! But the 100 story long one had shorter stories, and O. Henry stories are really easy to get through (quick, zippy dialogue, etc.). By contrast, a 5-10 story long compendium of Poe stories felt too long--he's a bit repetitive and heavy-handed, IMHO. Q. I'm not a big reader, but I do like the occasional short story. Which short stories have the best twist endings? Asked by jj16 - Sat Feb 7 01:50:40 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Having some computer problems, so this will be brief. :/ The two most widely acknowledged masters of the twist ending in literature are O Henry and Guy de Maupassant, so I pretty much have to mention a couple by each. O Henry * The Gift of the Magi - mentioned by Kate S, worth seconding * The Cop and the Anthem Guy de Maupassant * The Necklace - read by many in high school * The Piece of String - better than The Necklace, in my opinion Some of my personal favorite twist endings: * Red by Somerset Maugham * Appointment in Samarra retold by Somerset Maugham * The story of the widow of Ephesus from the Satyricon of Petronius Of course, I can't really explain why I chose these without spoiling the endings, but I hope you can take my word… [cont.] Answered by Mike Y - Sat Feb 7 03:02:47 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Short Stories"
