Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a general term for a family of transmission technologies for delivery of voice communications over IP networks such as the Internet or other packet-switched networks. Other terms frequently encountered and synonymous with VOIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, and broadband phone.

Internet telephony refers to communications services — voice, facsimile, and/or voice-messaging applications — that are transported via the Internet, rather than the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The basic steps involved in originating an Internet telephone call are conversion of the analog voice signal to digital format and compression/translation of the signal into Internet protocol (IP) packets for transmission over the Internet; the process is reversed at the receiving end.

VOIP systems employ session control protocols to control the set-up and tear-down of calls as well as audio codecs which encode speech allowing transmission over an IP network as digital audio via an audio stream. Codec use is varied between different implementations of VOIP (and often a range of codecs are used); some implementations rely on narrowband and compressed speech, while others support high fidelity stereo codecs.

Q. Very curious if I can get digital phone through a satellite internet provider. Hmm.

A. Yes you can use VOIP with satellite Internet providers. In particular you can use it with HughesNet service as long as you don't subscribe to the lowest speed package. You will probably want to go with the pro plus plan which is $69.95 per month.

A. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a protocol optimized for the transmission of voice through the Internet or other packet switched networks. VoIP is often used abstractly to refer to the actual transmission of voice (rather than the protocol implementing it). VoIP is also known as IP Telephony, Internet telephony, Broadband telephony, Broadband Phone and Voice over Broadband. "VoIP" is pronounced voyp. Companies providing VoIP service are commonly referred to as providers, and protocols which are used to carry voice signals over the IP network are commonly referred to as Voice over IP or VoIP protocols. They may be viewed as commercial realizations of the experimental Network Voice Protocol (1973) invented for the ARPANET providers.… [cont.]

Voice over internet protocols - Can I use a vonage adapter in other country than US & canada?
Q. Since VOIP adapters use data signals ...what happen if I take my vonage phone adapter to a non service country such as Italy?...how do they know that I plug my adapter on a DSL from ...Italy for example?

A. I have a really good friend who is originally from the Phillipines, even though she stays here in Chicago now. She has a sister that lives in Manila and she got her the Vonage subscription - with a Chicago (773) Area Code!!! So technically, it can be done. As long as the other person has a solid broadband connection. If they don't there will be disruptions or loss of quality in the service.
