Will the poison mouse bait(e.g.Decon) harm my cats if they catch a mouse that has eatenit?
Q. I have a mouse problem but hesitate to use a bait for fear it will harm my cats. they bring me mousie gifts every day and I would hate to make them sick.

A. Many poisons you can buy contain a secondary anhydrous poison which is water activated. You shouldn't use baits from home repair warehouses or grocery stores because they can kill on a secondary basis. Use only Warferin based baits, they are a strict blood thinner, not poison. These are controlled in many states, so contact a reputable pest control company. Warferin can be countered with a vitamin K shot at the vet if your cats eat it directly, but if it is a controlled bait it will have no secondary effect. (i.e. won't make kitty sick.) Snap traps are great if you want to check them at least once a day, and you wish to clean up dead, stinking, possibly disease ridden rodents from a crawlspace or attic. Your best bet is to use a bait… [cont.]

Mice are storing the poison pelets in shoes and boxes.?
Q. 1st time problem in 5 yrs of living in house now several mice being seen even in day light. put decon pelets out and next day it was empty! found all the poison in shoes in another room and in a box that stored some glass. could it be bird seed atracting them? sometimes seed drops under the deck. Storing poison pelets? How weird!

A. The mice are just exercising their natural "pack-rat" instincts. They think they are saving food up for the winter (similar to what squirrels do with putting nuts in trees). I've had experience with this before and the only way to solve this problem is to use traps instead of pellets. Don't use glue traps; they make for an even slower and more excruciating death than conventional traps do. All ways of killing mice work differently, have advantages and disadvantages: Poison: Works by dehydrating the mice, so that no matter how much water they drink, they can't drink enough to keep up. advantages: Mice usually are far away when they die, b/c they were in search of more water. = no mess for you to clean up! disadvantages: … [cont.]

Q. He put it down on Friday and says it may take a few days, they run like crazy at nite! It has been like this for almost 3 weeks now. I can't sleep like this, any ideas?? Oh and won't I smell dead mice when they do die? He claims I won't notice anything different other than be like hey they aren't running anymore, I disagree, I would think they will stink my Apt up! I don't know what to think now! He claims the poison eats them from the inside out and I won't smell a thing, please give me some guidance! Or tips or something!!

A. I knew someone who used poison in mice, and when they started dying wtf. The smell lingered for at least a month. Open the windows and nothing still smelled terrible. Most rat poisons attach the central nervous system, but there still is a corpse. Contact your cities dept of housing affairs.

A. First off, don't panic. The blood is likely from the mouse, not your cat, though the possibility certainly exists. Secondly, make sure there is food and water outside for her in case she does come back. Third, start going outside and calling for her. You'll need to spend a lot of time doing this, making the rounds of your neighborhood. If she is used to coming when you shake a can of cat treats, take them and shake them; it might attract her. Cover some distance; your cat can easily have gone a mile or more (perhaps much more, but let's hope not) from your home. Find the people in your area who take care of feral cat colonies and ask if they've seen your cat eating there. Put up flyers and ask your neighbors. There's a very good chance… [cont.]

My cats may have eaten decon!!?
Q. I don't believe they ate much of it, if in fact they did eat any of it, but just in case--for a 10-12 lb cat, how much decon would they have to consume before it becomes fatal? I have the poison in the basement, and keep the door shut with a lock. A friend was over yesterday, and he left the door open and I just noticed after about 24 hrs the open door. Unfortunately, just shutting the door doesn't work; the cats can and will open it so I put a Master lock on it so they can't push it open and get into stuff. Thought the decon in the basement would be safe from them, but I guessed wrong. As I said, if they did get into it, they didn't eat much of it, but how much decon would be fatal to them? The vet told me it won't take much at all, [cont.]

A. Get some vitamin K at the health food store. Feed them massive doses. Or Take in one cat get it confirmed and then get inject-able vitamin K from the vet and give them the shots yourself. Vitamin K is what they gave my mom to help her clot after giving birth 30 years ago.

If my dog got into Decon, are there symptoms of poisoning?
Q. My puppy got into De-con bait pellets. I immediately induced vomiting with peroxide and I think we got it all. I went to a nutrition store and found Vitamin K and alfalfa tablets that are high in Vit K. Everyone Ive talked to said she will be fine, but I'm really scared. She acts normal but has recently seemed to be having a problem urinating. She will go like normal but then continue to squat again and again with nothing. She is even having multiple accidents in the house. Is this from the Vit K treatment or a sign she needs to see a vet?? Please Help. Ive never had to deal with this.. my poor puppy!!

Is it safe to put rat poisoning in baby's room?
Q. I bought some decon for rats and I put it behind my daughters dresser, where there's no possible way she could get to to it. Is that safe though, as far as atracting the rats there? I put it there though because I've found them in her room.

A. I wouldnt put it in the childs room. Go under your house and spread the poision around on the ground- Or open the boxes of D-COn and throw them in under the house. That way the rodents will get to the poision without having to go to your childs room to get it.

Gopher solution??
Q. I used the stick to probe the tunnel for putting the gopher poison in the hole just in the tunnel( by feeling). It works some of the time. Does the Decon ( for rats) poison work ? or there is a better solution.
Asked by Y.P. Golf - Sat May 24 14:55:15 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It would work if they eat it, Decon will kill anything that eats enough of it. Gopher traps work too, but then you have to lift them to get the dead gopher out. I've heard about using flares, like you have for your car in a breakdown. You find the hole, light the flare, and toss it in the hole, the fumes kill the gophers.

Needed the dog to vomit, now can't get him to stop!?
Q. I have an 8 month old 35 lbs border collie/shepard mix. Tonight our washer backed up and spewed water all over the laundry room. While we were cleaning up, the dog snuck past us and started munching on the Decon rat poison trap we had sitting behind the water heater. After a quick google search I found that the first aid for this is to induce vomiting. A second google search revealed to use Ipecac, which I had on hand. It worked all right, but now I can't get the dog to stop vomiting! He's thrown up 4 times in the past half hour. We can't get him to the vet cause we live in the midwest and are currently snowed in. Any suggestions?

A. Yes, and good for you,you did exactly the right thing, though it does not feel that way right now. The effects of Ipecac can last for up to 6 hours depending on how much hit the dog stomach. If he is still vomiting say...tomorrow mid morning, or starts failing to hold down water for more then 10 hours, thats a vet visit. Other then that your good. Side note- wow you had Ipecac in your house?? good on you!

Rats in house Please help?
Q. I have recently discovered several rats living inside my house and I don't know how to get rid of them. I read about Decon, glue trap, and spring traps, but these things will leave behind dead carcasses that will give off foul smell. I also read about those ultrasonic things, but many have said that they're useless since rats will become accustomed to the frequency after a while. Is there a poison that will make the rats die after they drink water so I can find their carcasses and dispose them properly?
Asked by Vanquished Memories - Sun Nov 8 01:57:13 2009 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Many poisons cause the rat to go to water. The only problem is they can't always get to it and die inside the walls or attic. I recommend standard wooden spring traps bated with peanut butter. Use it only once. Dispose of it after each rat. After you set the traps, you need to find out how they got in. If you can't find find a place of entrance, call an expert. They know how to look for those entry point. Don't bother with the electronic devices. If they worked everybody would have them.

Is there a poison that will make the rats die after they drink water so I can find their carcasses and dispose them properly?

If they worked everybody would have them.

wHAT can I do about RATS!!!?
Q. Since the weather has turned a bit chilly we have noticed RAT activity in our garage. we have lived here for 6 years and NEVER had a rat. maybe a mouse here and there but NEVER a rat. There is no food source or water source in our garage so we assume they are just taking shelter. My belief is that they are coming from my neighbors yard. She has mainly only mowed it 2 times this past year and it had become overgrown with weeds, trash and dog feces. We have seen at least 5 and killed 4. We are using the decon pellets which they seem to just take the bag and go with it and we are now using traps too.. YUCK! We can't afford a new garage door to fix the minute cracks they can fit themselves through to get in. I'm afraid we already have an… [cont.]

A. The decon seemed to work really well with the field mice I had. I imagine it would work with rats, or if all else fails I hear a cat is always helpful, as once they smell a cat they are out!
